Drones are now an established capability in modern policing, supporting public safety, search and rescue, disaster response, crime scene management and intelligence-led operations. Salterton works with leading experts in drone operations, both land-based and marine-based, to provide specialist training, governance and capability support to police services and law enforcement agencies.

We pair accredited pilot training with the operating procedures and governance that make drone use lawful, accountable, safe and sustainable. Training is delivered in-country and tailored to each organisation's operating environment, building local capability that endures beyond the life of the programme rather than creating reliance on external support.

What We Deliver

Working with our drone specialists, we review existing drone policies and governance and make recommendations as appropriate. We can then deliver the following:

  • Foundation training (Lawful Operator). Five-day courses qualifying officers as lawful, competent and safe police drone pilots, combining classroom instruction, practical flight operations and online learning. Training aligns with UK GVC-style qualifications and recognised certifiable standards.
  • Intermediate training (Mission Specialist). Advanced operational skills including search and rescue, marine interoperability, extended visual line of sight (EVLOS) operations, and the management of parades and public events.
  • Commander and Specialist training. Command-level instruction covering the oversight of covert operations, public order and specialist deployments, delivered in smaller cohorts to support a closer, mentoring style of learning.
  • Access to a Learning Management System. Pre- and post-course access to an online learning platform, available around the clock to support continuous development and pilot currency.
  • Quick Reference Handbook. A drone governance manual covering the legal and regulatory framework, roles and authorisation levels, data protection and privacy safeguards, airmanship, and pilot currency and assurance guidance.
  • Standard Operating Procedures. Core operational procedures covering pre- and post-flight, deployment criteria, maintenance and asset management, and training, currency and competency standards.
  • Advanced Operating Procedures. Mission-grade procedures for search and rescue, marine operations, EVLOS and event management.
  • Commander Operating Procedures. Command-level procedures for covert operations, public order and displays, authorisation and authority workflows, and the managed operational risk of aviation services.
  • ISR Manual for covert operations. Documentation supporting intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance activity.
  • BVLOS Risk Management. An introduction to managing beyond visual line of sight operations.
  • Final report. A summary of outcomes and recommendations on completion.

Why Salterton

Our experts bring direct experience of designing and delivering police drone capability in the UK and across the Caribbean and British Overseas Territories, including recent programmes that have delivered a demonstrable operational impact. Their experience spans both land-based and marine-based operations, including deployment from vessels at sea.

We understand the realities of island and maritime policing, from complex geography and exposure to natural disasters to the need for rapid aerial situational awareness under genuine resource constraints. Our training is bespoke to each operating environment and aligned to emerging international standards, supporting interoperability between neighbouring forces and agencies.

By pairing training with robust governance, we ensure drone capability is not only operationally effective but lawful, accountable and sustainable. Delivery in-country reduces travel and abstraction costs and builds local capability, standard operating procedures can be adopted across agencies, and embedded governance protects against misuse or legal challenge. Competitive pricing and specialists experienced in the region mean the investment creates a durable policing capability that lasts well beyond the life of the programme.
