Iain Grafton MBE

Retired Detective Superintendent with 30 years of police experience, specialising in Police Conduct and Complaints investigation and resolution. Department for Education accredited National Leader of Governance, with 15 years’ experience of training school Governors and Trustees of Multi Academy Trusts, and leading in the investigation and resolution of complaints against schools and colleges.

Police Conduct and Complaints investigations; systems and processes of leadership and governance in education settings; investigation of public complaints, workplace grievances and staff conduct matters in both law enforcement and education settings. Chairing and advising in complaints Appeal Panel processes.

Experience:

30 years in policing, including 4 years as Head of Professional Standards; post-retirement consultancy across multiple Local Authorities and with the Department for Education in matters of leadership and professional standards in state education, and with UK forces and British Overseas Territories in similar matters.

About Iain

Iain Grafton is a retired Detective Superintendent and Firearms Commander with 30 years of police experience. For the final four years of his service, Iain led a UK police force's Professional Standards and Anti-Corruption capability and resources, overseeing both the police service response to public complaints, as well as in the role of SIO for sensitive and covert investigations into allegations of gross misconduct and criminality against those for working for law enforcement agencies.

Iain is a graduate of the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies at the University of Portsmouth, and he holds a Master’s Degree (With Merit) in Police Science and Management.

‍In the New Years’ Honours List of 2011, Iain was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to policing.

Since retirement, Iain has developed a diverse leadership, advisory and training consultancy role across the public service sector. He has worked extensively as a consultant and trainer, and led on reviews of policy and processes of public complaints and conduct matters, and conducted independent investigations into complaints and allegations in both law enforcement and education settings.

Iain is an accredited National Leader of Governance, a role that has required him to conduct external reviews of the arrangements and effectiveness of structure of governance in education settings on behalf of the Department of Education. In conjunction with this he has delivered training to school Governors and Trustees across the South West and South East of the UK, mentored and supported newly appointed Chairs of Governing Boards, and designed and delivered a training package to school leaders that aims to support them in their roles when dealing with complaints against their schools.
